What Insurance Covered (and Didn't) for IUI With a Known Donor

Our insurance covered IUI for Gina, but not the pieces that came with using a known donor: sperm thawing, freezing, and donation. Every plan is different, so call your insurance before you start and get the answers in writing.

Here's what was covered for us, what wasn't, and how to keep it all straight.

What happened to us

Gina always wanted to carry, and we decided to start with IUI because it was the more financially responsible first step. We were working with a known donor, and our Texas clinic told us right away to get a known donor agreement. Counseling was required before we could move forward, so we went through the clinic for everything.

Insurance covered IUI for Gina, but the donor pieces were a different story. Sperm thawing, freezing, and donation weren't covered, and with a high deductible, more of the cost landed on us up front.

Insurance also wanted six rounds of IUI before it would cover IVF. Then, at our very first IUI monitoring appointment, the doctor spotted stage 3 endometriosis on Gina's ultrasound. After three failed IUIs, with that diagnosis on record, our doctor said we could move on to IVF. That diagnosis mattered. Without it, we could have been looking at three more rounds.

When we got to IVF, the gaps showed up again. Some of our genetic testing, plus our freezing and thawing, weren't covered either.

What did insurance cover for our IUI with a known donor?

Every plan is different. Yours may cover more, or less. Ask before you start.

What should you ask your insurance before IUI with a known donor?

  • Is IUI covered? How many rounds?
  • Are sperm thawing, freezing, and storage covered?
  • Are any donor-related costs covered?
  • What do you require before covering IVF?
  • Does my diagnosis change that?
  • Is genetic testing covered? Which parts?
  • What's my deductible?
  • Do I need prior authorization for anything?
  • Can I get that in writing?

Write down who you talked to and when. You'll want it later.

How do you keep insurance straight with WeFertility?

Insurance is a lot of calls, letters, and bills. WeFertility keeps them from slipping through the cracks.

  • Make every insurance call a task. Assign it to whoever's on calls that week. It stays in needs attention until it's done.
  • Add the paperwork to the visit it came from. Upload the letter, or snap a picture of the statement.
  • Log every bill as it hits. The workflow walks you through paying it or getting reimbursed.
  • See what's not covered add up. Spending by category shows you where the money's going.
  • Share it when they ask. Email or text a document right from WeFertility.
  • Control who sees what. Your known donor doesn't need to see your insurance bills.

This is our experience, not medical or legal advice. Talk to your clinic, attorney, or tax professional.
