How Much Should You Save Before Starting Fertility Treatment?

There's no single number, but set money aside in a dedicated account before you start, and plan for more than your clinic quotes. A friend who'd been through IVF told us to plan for about $80,000, so we started saving while we were engaged.

Here's how we saved, what still surprised us, and why a dedicated account takes so much pressure off.

What happened to us

We started saving before we were married. A friend who went through IVF told us to plan for about $80,000. Their journey took three years.

So we opened a dedicated bank account just for this. We were one of the first in our friend group to do that.

We both work corporate jobs. I'm in sales and paid on commission, so my paycheck isn't the same every month. Knowing the money was already there mattered.

We chose IUI first because it was the more financially responsible place to start. Three rounds didn't work, so we pivoted to IVF.

Then the real bills started. Our egg retrieval medication cost more than we expected. Retrieval bills hit three days in a row: $2,000, $4,000, $3,000. Then came an $8,500 bill for lab work and testing on our embryos, plus deposits for the embryo transfer.

Those bills were a shock. But that money was already set aside for this. We'd planned for it and set our expectations from the beginning, so it almost felt like it was already gone. That took so much pressure off.

Why isn't there one number?

Because every journey is different. What you need depends on:

  • Your path: IUI, IVF, donor, surrogacy, or adoption
  • What your insurance covers, and what it doesn't
  • Your clinic, your medications, and your timeline
  • How long your journey takes. Nobody knows that going in.

Our friend's journey took three years. Ours looked different. Yours will too.

What questions change how much you need?

QuestionWhy it matters
What does insurance cover?Ours covered IUI but not the donor sperm pieces.
What's our deductible?A high deductible means more out of pocket up front.
What will medications cost?Ours cost more than we expected. Look for cheaper options before you start.
What will embryo lab work and testing cost?Ours was $8,500 in one bill.
Is genetic testing covered? Some of ours wasn't.
What do freezing and storage cost? Not covered for us.
When are deposits due?Transfer deposits came while retrieval bills were still rolling in.

How do you start saving for fertility treatment?

  • Open a dedicated account. When the money's set aside for this, every bill feels less like a hit. Worst case, you don't use it all, and you've got savings for something else.
  • Start early. We started while we were engaged.
  • Ask your clinic for a cost estimate for each step. Then ask what's not included.
  • Look for nonprofits that help with medication costs. Do this before you start, not after the pharmacy bill.
  • Plan for bills to come in clusters. They don't spread out nicely.

How do you keep track once the bills start?

This is where WeFertility comes in.

Log every bill as it hits. Snap a picture of it. No scanner needed. See your spending by category so you know where the money's going.

If a bill needs to be paid or reimbursed, the workflow walks you through it. Pending reimbursements stay on your radar until the money's back. Your partner sees it all too, so you're not the only one holding the numbers.

At tax time, export your expenses and hand them to your tax professional.
