How Many IUI Cycles Before IVF? How We Knew It Was Time to Switch

Many clinics suggest about three rounds of IUI before moving to IVF, but the right number depends on your age, your diagnosis, and your insurance. Ours wanted six. We stopped at three, because a diagnosis changed the math.
What happened to us
IUI was supposed to be our starting line, not the whole race. It's less invasive and less expensive, and since Gina always wanted to carry, it was the responsible first step. We went in hopeful. Well, I went in hopeful. Gina protects her heart by expecting the worst. Between the two of us, we had every possible outcome covered.
Then, at our first monitoring appointment to prepare for IUI, our fertility doctor found stage 3 endometriosis. It had been in Gina's records all along, and nobody had told us. That's its own story.
We kept going with IUI. One round, then a second, then a third. Each one meant a month of monitoring, timing, and waiting, and Gina will tell you the IUI two-week wait feels longer than any wait in IVF. None of them worked.
Our insurance wanted six rounds of IUI before it would cover IVF. But with stage 3 endometriosis on record and three failed cycles behind us, our doctor said we could move on. That conversation likely saved us three more rounds.
So we pivoted. And because Gina had already asked about our clinic's holiday shutdown, we started IVF in November instead of waiting for the new year.
How many IUI cycles do most people try before IVF?
There's no universal number. Many clinics suggest about three cycles before reassessing, and some recommend moving to IVF sooner for patients over 40. Your insurance may have its own rule, and it won't always match your doctor's.
What actually moves the number:
| Factor | Why it matters | What it looked like for us |
|---|---|---|
| Your diagnosis | Some conditions make IUI less likely to work | Stage 3 endometriosis, found at our first monitoring appointment to prepare for IUI |
| Your age | Doctors may suggest moving sooner as you get older | — |
| Your insurance | Some plans require a set number of IUIs first | Ours wanted six |
| Your clinic's calendar | Shutdowns can cost you a month or two | We started IVF before the holiday closure |
| Your bandwidth | Every round is a month of hoping and waiting | Three rounds before we switched |
What should you ask your doctor before switching to IVF?
- Based on my diagnosis, how many IUIs do you recommend?
- Is there anything in my history that makes IVF a better next step?
- What does my insurance require, and does my diagnosis change that?
- What has to happen before we can start IVF?
- Are there any clinic shutdowns coming up?
- How will IVF change our costs and timeline?
How do you switch to IVF without losing time?
When we pivoted, our to-do list didn't just get longer. It changed shape: new consults, new bloodwork, insurance approval, medication orders, and deposits, many of which had to happen in a certain order.
That's what WeFertility is built for. Add every step in order and assign each one to a person. You'll see what's active, what needs attention, and what's blocked, like a medication order waiting on insurance approval. Appointments sync to the calendar you already use, and when the bills come, the workflow walks you through paying them or getting reimbursed.
